Nutrition Honors
  WHY SHOULD I JOIN NUTRITION HONORS?

    This program is designed for students to

  • Gain a deeper insight in specific topic areas of nutrition that interest YOU
  • Experience a different approach to learning, in general,  one more meaningful and hands-on
  • Be in smaller classes that offer more intimate learning and critical thinking opportunities
  • Get to know your professors, their passions, and their research on a deeper level
  • Develop friendships with other honors students committed to learning
  • May be more competitive for admission to professional schools, graduate schools, dietetic internships, scholarships, and employment
  ADMISSION - HONORS ELIGIBILITY

    Current Students:

  • Have an overall Texas A&M University GPR of at least 3.5
  • Submit an application (NUTR website) to the Coordinator.

    Entering freshmen (before classes begin):

  • Accepted as a Nutritional Sciences major
  • Graduate in the top 25% of high school class OR
  • Identified as National Merit Semifinalist, National Merit Scholar, or National Hispanic Scholar OR
  • Achieve an SAT score of 1310 (reading /writing + math - minimum 660 and 610, respectively) or a composite of 28 on the ACT (minimum 27 each on verbal and math)

Students are encouraged to consult with an Academic Advisor as early as possible in their academic career to plan their course sequence. Students are also encouraged to consult with the Nutrition Honors Program Coordinator each year to review program progress.

Submit an application (located on the NUTR departmental website) to the Coordinator.  Applications are accepted at any time.
REQUIREMENTS FOR NUTRITION HONORS
  • Complete requirements for a B.S degree in Nutritional Sciences
  • Maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPR at Texas A&M University (TAMU) and 3.25 honors GPR
  • Complete 18 credits of honors-level (H) courses. All honors courses must be taken at TAMU
  • Complete at least 12 credits of honors level (H) NUTR courses. For this requirement:
    • At least 3 credits are required to be at the 400 -level or above, which includes 485H, 491H and graduate courses
    • Up to 6 credits may be completed in Honors Directed Studies (485H) or Honors Research (491H). No more than 6 credits of NUTR 485H and NUTR 491H combined will be counted towards completion of Nutrition honors program requirements.
    • Up to 6 credits may be completed in graduate-level courses (600-level)
  • Complete 6 additional hours of honors-level (H) coursework in any area or in Nutrition
  • Complete at least 3 credits of honors-level (H) coursework each academic year
HONORS RECOGNITION AND GRADUATION WITH HONORS (3.5 Overall and 3.25 Honors GPR):
  • After graduation, the transcript will state the distinction of Nutritional Sciences Honors
  • All Honors courses are designated as honors on a student’s official transcript
