B.S. Nutrition
The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition degree focuses on human health and the prevention of diseases that are related to lifestyle, particularly diet and nutrition. This major prepares students for graduate school, health professional schools such as medicine, dental, physician assistant, or becoming a dietitian. Graduates are also prepared for careers in corporate wellness, health promotion, the food industry, public health, pharmaceutical sales, medical and research laboratories, biotechnology, or government.

Nutrition Program Details
As Nutrition majors, students learn fundamentals of the biological and social sciences to understand the relationships between nutrients, food components and human health. Core courses emphasize the integrative role of nutrients in biochemistry, genetics, physiology and anatomy, microbiology, and immunology that promote wellness and enhance the quality of life.
After completing their core courses and any other eligibility requirements, students can choose one of two tracks in general nutrition or didactic program in dietetics.

Degree Tracks
Our department offers two specialized, tracks to provide students with more opportunities to excel academically and provide flexibility in their chosen career path.
Didactic Program in Dietetics
The strong science foundation provided in our ACEND-accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) prepares students for a dietetic internship and the Registered Dietitian path.
Human Health (effective Fall 2024)
The Human Health Track prepares students for careers in the human health sector such as biomedical research, professional schools in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and physician assistant.
Minor in Nutrition
The Department of Nutrition offers a minor in Nutrition that will prepare students with general knowledge about the role and impact of human nutrition on health and physiology and different nutritional requirements through the lifespan. Nutrition Certificates
Culinary Health Certificate – Effective Fall 2024
The areas of culinary nutrition, culinary medicine, and food as medicine are gaining interest across healthcare disciplines to increase nutrition education for health professionals, such as physicians and nurses. The 13-credit Certificate in Culinary Health will provide hands-on opportunities for nutrition majors to develop food and cooking skills that can be applied to nutrition education for health promotion and disease prevention.

NUTR 301: Nutrition through Life – 3 hours
NUTR 404: Nutrition Assessment and Planning or NUTR 412: Nutritional Treatment of Disease – 3 hours
NUTR 408: Professional Development in Nutrition and Dietetics or NUTR 400: Ethics in Nutrition and Healthcare – 1 hour
CULN 305: Culinary Health (includes cooking lab) – 4 hours
CULN 481: Culinary Health Practicum (includes cooking lab) – 2 hours

Career Options in Nutrition
In addition to preparing for post-graduate degree programs, the breadth and depth of training you receive will prepare you to find employment with competitive food, nutrition and health based companies and with firms outside of that sector. Recent companies that have hired our graduates include Ben E. Keith, Coca-Cola, Hardie’s Fresh Foods, St. Joseph’s Regional Hospital, Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas Woman’s-Houston, WIC.
