The Department of Nutrition Honors Program offers an enhanced learning experience to qualified, academically-talented, and motivated students. In addition to developing at the professional level, students in the Honors Program have the opportunity to enrich their education through scholastically-challenging curriculum and an inquiry-based learning process. Honors students are encouraged to pursue additional distinctions at the university level. As an honors student, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Gain a deeper insight in specific topic areas of nutrition that interest you
- Experience a different, more meaningful and hands-on, approach to learning
- Be in smaller classes that offer more intimate learning and critical thinking opportunities
- Get to know your professors, their passions and their research on a deeper level
- May enhance competitiveness for admission process to professional schools, graduate schools, dietetics internships, and scholarships
Honors Eligibility and Admission
To qualify for admission, incoming freshman must meet the following requirements:
- Accepted as a Nutrition major
- Graduate in the top 25% of high school class OR
- Identified as National Merit Semifinalist, National Merit Scholar, or National Hispanic Scholar OR
- Overall score of 1310 or above on the SAT, with a minimum reading and writing score of 660 and minimum math score of 620 OR
- Composite ACT score of 28 or higher, with minimum scores of 27 on the verbal and math sections.
To qualify for admission, current students must meet the following requirements:
- Have an overall Texas A&M University GPR of at least 3.5
- Submit an application to the coordinator
Students are encouraged to consult with an academic advisor as early as possible in their academic career to plan their course sequence. Students are also encouraged to consult with the Nutrition Honors Program Coordinator each year to review program progress.
Program Requirements
In addition to satisfying the degree requirements for the B.S. in Nutrition, honors students must maintain a cumulative TAMU GPR of at least 3.50, a GPR in honors classes of at least 3.25, and no grade in an honors course below a ”C.” Students must also satisfy the following additional requirements:
- Complete 18 credits of honors-level (H) courses. All honors courses must be taken at TAMU
- Complete at least 12 credits of honors level (H) NUTR courses. For this requirement:
- At least 3 credits are required to be at the 400 -level or above, which includes 485H, 491H and graduate courses
- Up to 6 credits may be completed in Honors Directed Studies (485H) or Honors Research (491H). No more than 6 credits of NUTR 485H and NUTR 491H combined will be counted towards completion of nutrition honors program requirements.
- Up to 6 credits may be completed in graduate-level courses (600-level)
- Complete 6 additional hours of honors-level (H) coursework in any area or in Nutrition
- Complete at least 3 credits of honors-level (H) coursework each academic year
